Athletes Get A Big Assist

If you don’t believe student athletes have goals beyond sports you’re probably not listening to them. At a recent training session The Champion Generation Initiative conducted for Indianapolis Public Schools athletes we heard athlete after athlete share their career aspirations to be a lawyer, doctor, bio physicist, electrical engineer and a music producer, just to name a few. The students sharing their goals were among a special group of young people recently selected to be part of the Athletes of Character program at the largest school district in the state of Indiana. These worthy students will represent the district at various events, model the attributes of true student athletes at their respective schools, and will speak to younger kids about the importance of education as well as participation in sports. The Athletes of Character program, spearheaded by Emil Ekiyor, Ann Hansen, and Lawrence Courtney is one of the most unique and ambitious programs you’ll find directed at high school student athletes.

The young people involved were very impressive as they articulated and demonstrated how they are working toward reaching their full potential. We know they are not alone in their thirst and desire for success. There are so many other young people who want to experience success in sports, school, and life. That’s why we feel it’s our obligation to continue the mission of the Champion Generation Initiative. We are committed to helping them realize the goals they have set for themselves.

The group heard from CGI Director Dennis Jarrett on what it means to plan, prepare, play and live like a champion. Jarrett also challenged them to “stay on the path” and they would eventually reach their destination. The group also heard Gary Naylor, an executive at Roche Diagnostics share his story of how sports played a significant part in his ultimate career success.

In addition to the sessions with the athletes, a mini-workshop was conducted with the parents to talk about ways they can encourage and empower their children along their path to greatness. Parents were also given information about the NCAA Eligibility process; shown how to help their child navigate through the recruiting process; and reminded of the crucial role parents play in the development of their child’s character.

After spending time with these students, we have no doubt this group of talented, committed and conscientious student athletes will experience tremendous achievement throughout their high school career and beyond.

And we will be there to help them along the way.
